Zinc roofing and cladding has a long track record overseas, but for many Australian architects and specifiers, the material’s properties and system options are still unfamiliar territory.

As sustainability credentials, life cycle performance and material longevity move to the centre of specification decisions, designers are looking past surface aesthetics to ask harder questions: how long will this material last, what does it cost the planet to make and how does it behave over the full life of a building.

Today’s session will explore zinc as a building envelope material, with practical examples, and how its physical properties, environmental credentials and system options can help you deliver projects that are durable, low-maintenance and sustainable.

By the end of this CPD session, you will be able to:

  • Identify the sustainable and green qualities of zinc over other metals from a Life Cycle Analysis perspective.
  • Detail and design zinc roofing and cladding specifications with a view to material longevity and sustainability.
  • List compatible and incompatible materials when used with zinc building envelopes.
