Though roughly 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, once the world’s oceans, along with polar ice caps, glaciers and so forth are accounted for, only 1% of that figure is suitable for human consumption.

Globally, access to an adequate supply of clean, portable water has become a major cause for concern. It is estimated that over a billion people lack access to water and another 2.7 billion find it scarce for at least one month of the year.

Focusing on domestic consumption, this CPD presentation is untended to shine a light on solutions to the problem of water wastage.

Beginning by identifying the scale of the problem, our speaker will go on to identify the various certification schemes (including WELS) that are intended to address it, as well as the various fittings and appliances that specifiers can employ to minimise the consumption of what is a precious resource.

By the end of this session, you should be able to:

• Explain why water scarcity has become a cause for concern, both globally and here in Australia

• Identify the ways in which domestic Australian consumers use water, as well as the areas in which there is potential for them to save this resource.

• Outline the regulatory framework associated with plumbing systems and water savings in Australia, as well as the various international certification schemes associated with sustainable water usage.

• Identify the various types of sanitaryware products, plumbing systems and appliances that can help consumers reduce water consumption.
