There are several important considerations when designing and specifying windows and doors under the NCC 2022. In particular, these elements play a key role in managing heat flow, solar gain, condensation risk and energy efficiency. Therefore, they are essential for thermal performance and regulatory compliance. As energy efficiency requirements tighten, understanding how windows and doors are assessed under Section J is critical for architects, designers and specifiers.

Windows and doors are key components of the building envelope. Consequently, they strongly influence how a façade performs as a system. Glazing selection, frame materials, thermal breaks, system configuration and installation detailing all affect energy demand and a building’s ability to meet Section J requirements. For example, poor specification decisions can directly impact compliance, occupant comfort and long-term performance. However, when chosen and installed correctly, high-performing window and door systems enhance durability, reduce energy loads and provide greater certainty during design and construction.

This CPD session focuses on Section J of NCC 2022. Specifically, it examines the performance requirements for windows and doors in commercial buildings. The presentation explains how to assess thermal performance, outlines compliance pathways, and shows how window and door choices interact with façade design to affect whole-building outcomes. Additionally, attendees will learn how product selection, system detailing and documentation impact compliance at both design and delivery stages.

As a result, real-world specification scenarios are used to equip professionals with the knowledge to navigate Section J requirements and make informed decisions on future projects.

Learning outcomes:

  • Identify and apply Section J requirements for windows and doors under NCC 2022

  • Assess window and door performance in relation to thermal efficiency and energy use

  • Understand how glazing, framing and system selection impact building performance

  • Recognise the implications of NCC 2022 for future window and door specification
