Tubular Daylighting Devices – Technology & Design Applications

Architects have long relied on windows for side lighting and skylights or roof glazing for top lighting to bring natural light into a building. But these conventional methods have limits.
Tubular Daylighting Devices (TDDs) were developed to solve exactly this problem, delivering natural light into spaces those traditional methods can’t reach. Increasingly, though, architects are looking beyond this functional role, exploring how TDDs can also be used deliberately as a design tool, shaping how light and space are experienced.
Today’s session will build practical knowledge around TDD technology: how the system works, the design tools available for incorporating TDDs into a project, and how they can be used to meet compliance and sustainability requirements, illustrated through real-world applications from around the world.

- Identify the key reasons for prioritising daylight in building design and the daylighting strategies available to achieve it.
- Explain the technology zones that make up a Tubular Daylighting Device (TDD).
- Apply learnings from real-world case studies to identify opportunities for using TDDs in your own projects.
- Understand relevant NCC/BCA requirements and certifications governing TDD specification.
