Maximising Building Performance – The Essential Role Of Insulation In IEQ

Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) – the overall quality of a building’s indoor environment from the perspective of the health and wellbeing of its occupants – is a fundamental aspect of building science.

A complex notion, it relates to – and is affected by – a range of factors, including thermal comfort, acoustic comfort, indoor air quality, moisture/condensation, and the presence of natural light.

In this session of CPD Live, we focus on one class of products, namely insulation. We explain the ways products of this type can affect the IEQ of a building, and therefore the health and well-being of its occupants.

Identifying the different types of insulation currently available, our speakers point out the ways they can be employed to improve thermal comfort, indoor air quality, acoustic comfort, and moisture management.

They outline the strengths of these insulation options, the types of applications they are most suitable for, the regulatory requirements associated with their use, and the ways they can improve the IEQ of your next project.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this presentation, you should be able to:

  • Describe the key concepts of indoor environmental quality
  • Recognise how thermal insulation and pliable building membranes influence the indoor environment
  • Explain the key performance benefits of insulation in the built environment
  • Identify the various types of insulation and explain how they achieve National Construction Code requirements.
