Life Cycle Costs & Value In Aluminium Facade Systems – Balancing Performance & Sustainability

Aluminium façade systems are far from a one-size-fits-all proposition. Broadly speaking, specifiers seeking such products can choose between solid aluminium panels, corrugated core panels, and non-combustible mineral core panels.

As is the case with most types of architectural products, each has its own strengths and benefits (in terms of design potential, function, and performance), and each has its own weaknesses.

On top of that, and just as importantly, each type of aluminium façade system comes with its own cost. Here, of course, cost is about more than the product’s price tag. Accurate evaluations of cost in this sense, involve an understanding of ‘life cycle costs’.

Beyond initial costs, it involves consideration of the structural costs involved in specification; operational costs (such as the product’s effects on thermal efficiency and HVAC); maintenance costs; and end-of-life costs.

Evaluations of lifecycle costs should also acknowledge environmental costs. They should factor in carbon footprint and other environmental impacts.

In this session of CPD Live, we consider all of the above and more. Our speakers outline the life cycle cost evaluations that should be considered when specifying aluminium façade systems.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this presentation, you should be able to:

  • Identify the various life cycle costs (LCC) of facade systems
  • Compare the engineering, sustainability, and performance implications of various aluminium façade materials
  • Recognise the importance of warranties, maintenance, structural requirements, and sustainability in LCC
  • Outline how non-combustible mineral core panels rate in terms of life cycle costs and sustainability
