Biomaterials in Commercial Interiors – Functionality meets Biophilia & Sustainability

Right now, the use of biomaterials in architecture is experiencing a renaissance. Beyond the most obvious material (i.e. timber), we are beginning to see a broad range of such products in the built environment.

If the first attraction of these materials centres around biophilia and their capacity to facilitate a connection between the people and the natural world, the second involves sustainability. All have been judged to be environmentally friendly. On top of this, most of these biomaterials have something to offer in terms of functionality. Some materials can be used as insulation, some help improve indoor air quality, while others deliver acoustic benefits, and so on.

With all of this in mind, in this session of CPD Live, we examine the use of biomaterials in commercial applications. Beginning by identifying the various options available and their respective stages of development, our speakers will outline all the key considerations associated with their use – what types of applications they are most suitable for, what benefits they deliver, why they represent a genuinely sustainable option, and more.

At the end of this presentation, you should be able to:

  • Identify the various biomaterials suitable for installation in commercial interiors
  • Outline the benefits of these materials compared to traditional alternatives
  • Explain the circumstances in which biomaterials represent an environmentally sustainable option
  • Outline the considerations, including the regulations, associated with the use of biomaterials
