Beyond the Surface: Rethinking Interior Materials in Contemporary Architecture takes a practical, design-led look at how engineered wood panels and surface technologies are selected and integrated into interior environments. We’ll explore how different material typologies, such as particleboard, fibreboard and compact panels, work together with decorative surface technologies to deliver performance, durability and design outcomes.

We’ll also look at the factors that influence specification decisions, including environmental conditions, surface durability, moisture resistance and indoor air quality, and how these translate into real-world applications across joinery, wall systems and furniture.

At the end of this presentation, you should be able to:

  • Explain the different types of engineered interior panels and decorative surface technologies used in contemporary architecture.
  • Identify performance characteristics of materials such as particleboard panels, MDF panels, laminates and compact boards.
  • Understand how decorative surface technologies influence durability and maintenance requirements.
  • Apply specification strategies when selecting interior materials for joinery, furniture and wall surfaces.
