Achieving Optimal Acoustic Solutions

In today’s architectural landscape, acoustic performance is a cornerstone of spatial quality and user experience. As our built environment becomes more complex and multifunctional, the ability to control sound between zones is critical. Acoustic operable walls and sliding systems provide an adaptable solution, enabling dynamic space use while maintaining privacy and acoustic separation. However, performance doesn’t happen by default; it is the result of precise, well-considered specification and documentation.
This CPD is designed for architects and specifiers involved in the design and documentation of flexible, acoustically controlled spaces. We’ll explore key acoustic concepts such as Rw, NRC, and DnT,w, and examine how real-world factors, like flanking paths, ceiling conditions and installation quality, can influence on-site performance. You will gain practical guidance on specifying operable walls and large-format sliders, including configuration options, finishes and structural support requirements. The session also addresses common documentation oversights that compromise acoustic outcomes, supported by real-world case studies that illustrate both challenges and best-practice solutions.
Learning outcomes:
By the end of this presentation, you should have a clearer understanding of the following:
- Understand how sound behaves in buildings and how to control it effectively.
- Identify different types of operable walls and sliders and where they work best.
- Specify acoustic operable wall systems with confidence and avoid common documentation mistakes.
- Evaluate key safety and compliance considerations using real-world examples and apply these insights to avoid common design and installation pitfalls.
