More than just an nuisance, noise pollution has significant public health implications, including reduced cognitive performance, increased levels of cardiovascular disease, and reductions in quality of life.

And with urbanisation and population growth – this problem is sure to increase with serious implications on the way that we live, learn and work.

This session considers the ways that architects can help with the issue of noise pollution. Our speakers identify the scale of the problem, outline the regulations associated with noise abatement, and identify the various noise reduction solutions available and how to specify these.

In particular, they point out the ways that a new category of products, acoustic blinds and curtains, can help architects and specifiers solve the problem of noise pollution.

By the end of this session, you should be able to:

  • Outline the scale of the noise pollution problem in the urban Australian context.
  • Identify the negative health consequences associated with excessive environmental noise.
  • Define the phenomenon of ‘sound’ and explain how and why it decreases.
  • Identify the various noise reduction solutions available and evaluate each in terms of effectiveness.
  • Outline the regulations surrounding acoustics as they relate to architects and designers.

Cameron is the a Director of Acoustic Blinds and Curtains. Cameron has a Bachelor in Applied Sciences from Sydney University and over 15 years experience in digital and marketing. Cameron’s focus is Acoustic Blinds and Curtains product development – and is currently studying Acoustics at UNSW.

Michael Phillips Director, Acoustic Blinds and Curtains

Michael is a qualified Member of the Australian Acoustical Society Acoustic Engineer with experience spanning across projects of all scopes and disciplines specialising in Architectural & Building Acoustics, Environmental Acoustics, Product Research, Development & Design and Corporate Training.

As a leading Acoustical Product Expert Michael has led and conducted research in supporting several prominent local Australian manufacturers in improving their Acoustical Systems, educating on product knowledge and developing appropriate Technical Data Sheets.

Michael is also an experienced and practicing Architectural Acoustics Lecturer, which allows him to be continual exposure to both the latest professional and academic practices. This allows him to be uniquely positioned to apply proven Acoustical Engineering methods, as well as, the latest in theoretical Acoustic Modelling Technologies.
